James Phillips has over thirty years’ experience as a respected heritage consultant. He is a skilled negotiator who able to balance the realities of modern-day development with the sensitivities of heritage. His practical solutions to often complex heritage matters deliver successful requirement for development outcomes.
James began his career working with Daryl Jackson on the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and for Flower and Coutts on several housing projects for the Defence Housing Authority and Anglican Retirement Villages.
James’ experience across several discipline is advantageous when dealing with complex heritage issues and their related impacts on project delivery. These include issues to do with town planning, code compliance (BCA, Fire safety, AS 1428 etc.), Land and Environment Court, building remediation, architectural design, and construction.
James is the preferred heritage consultant to a wide variety of clients, including Commonwealth, Local and State Governments, large multi-national consortiums, developers, architects, and residential owner/occupier renovators.
A large part of James’ work involves acting as an Expert Witness on heritage matters, in both the NSW Land and Environment Court and NSW Supreme Court. He is particularly skilled at negotiating outcomes at s.34 stage of the appeals process, prior to matters reaching a full hearing.
